MSI Raider 18 MAX HX CU9 290HX Plus RTX 5090 Review: The Flagship Desktop Replacement

The MSI Raider 18 MAX HX CU9 290HX Plus RTX 5090 sits at the absolute top of MSI’s lineup, built around the flagship RTX 5090 24GB GPU in an 18 inch chassis that holds nothing back. This is a true desktop replacement for gamers and creators who want the single most powerful mobile configuration available, with essentially no compromises.

Display

The 18 inch UHD+ (3840 x 2400) Mini LED panel runs at 120Hz with genuine IPS-level color accuracy, 100 percent DCI-P3 coverage, and VESA DisplayHDR 1000 certification. Mini LED backlighting delivers dramatically better contrast and local dimming than a standard IPS panel, making this display equally suited to color-critical creative work and cinematic gaming visuals.

Gaming and Creative Performance

At the core is the Intel Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus processor, paired with the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 24GB GDDR7 GPU, currently the most powerful mobile graphics configuration on the market. This combination handles every modern game at maximum settings with ray tracing enabled, while the massive 24GB of VRAM makes it equally capable for 3D rendering, AI workloads, and heavy video editing. 32GB of DDR5-6400 RAM across two slots (expandable up to 128GB) keeps even the heaviest multitasking smooth, and the 2TB PCIe Gen5 NVMe SSD, with a second Gen4 M.2 slot available, offers both extreme speed and room to grow.

Battery, Ports and Connectivity

A substantial 99.9Whr battery (just under the standard airline carry-on limit) is paired with a hefty 400W adapter to feed this system’s demands. Connectivity is genuinely cutting-edge, headlined by two Thunderbolt 5 ports supporting DisplayPort and 120Gbps data transfer, alongside three USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 ports and HDMI 2.1 with 8K output support. Intel Killer Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 round out the wireless side.

Audio, Keyboard and Build

Sound quality here is a genuine standout, with Sound by Dynaudio, Nahimic 3 audio enhancement, and Hi-Res Audio certification driving a 4-speaker and 2-woofer setup. The per-key RGB keyboard by SteelSeries brings genuine mechanical-adjacent gaming keyboard pedigree to a laptop, complete with a Copilot key. At 3.6kg, this is unmistakably a desk-first machine, backed by a 2-year manufacturer’s warranty.
